Užduoties aprašymas (anglų k.)

Designing Myths

How can design be used to influence, alter and provoke contemporary mythmaking by using and combining information from, or inspired by, the physical surroundings of the Curonian Spit and design and distribute these using space on and off line.

Outline

Nida Art Colony in Lithuania is in many ways an exceptional place. Located on an artificial peninsula on the westernmost point of Baltic States, the geological structure (the only island of Lithuania as the Lithuanians say) is itself designed nature. Rumor has it that sand storms can cover a whole house overnight. Architectural vernacular reminisces both Soviet modernism (such as a radio station) and Nordic rune signs. Archeological findings on the island date back to the stone age, but a more recent history seems absent. Politically, there is the proximity of Kaliningrad, the Russian military enclave, as well as a former POW camp site from the French-Prussian war. The surroundings of Nida can be seen as a range of dualities. From defunct symbols in architecture to the controlled and designed nature of its surroundings. Now a resort for beach tourists in summer, the artist colony Nida has no one less than writer Thomas Mann as one of its founders. Some of the countries in the region (Finland, Estonia) are among the technologically most advanced countries in the world. Who knew Skype is originally Estonian and Nokia Finnish? This new North on the crossroads of Europe and Russia is in many social and economic respects far more advanced that its distant relatives Germany, France and Sweden yet is difficult to grasp this potential and visualize this and its history.
This kick off of the first GDA Summer Sessions will take the surroundings of Nida Lithuania to apply contemporary design research strategies with a group off students from all over the world. The seeming absence of a contemporary history will inspire projects that take the physical environment as a starting point to design and speculate on new myths and map, visualize and combine existing ones.
