Data Driven Art Archive

LithuanianArt.com is a digital art archive presenting a curated collection of Lithuanian paintings, sculptures, and books. The platform is built on a clear principle: art remains central, while technology functions as an invisible system layer enabling structure, scalability, and long term access.

Client collaboration

The project was developed in collaboration with Dr. Jaunius Gumbys and the Lithuanian Art Fund. The platform was defined as a cultural and research oriented system rather than a promotional website. Design decisions focused on information architecture, usability, and content longevity. Real user behaviour informed structural choices, ensuring clarity and consistency across the archive.

Project goals

To design a minimal, distraction free interface dominated by artworks. To structure a large scale collection by medium, author, theme, and time. To create intuitive navigation suitable for both researchers and general audiences. To apply data driven visualisation without reducing artistic value. To ensure stable performance across desktop and mobile environments.

Project results

We created a clean, responsive archive with a clear system of collections and filters. A custom algorithm, Colours in Time, calculates the average colour value of each artwork and visualises the archive as a temporal grid. Each colour unit operates simultaneously as data point, navigation interface, and abstract visual representation. This system enables pattern recognition across time while preserving direct access to individual artworks. The result is a hybrid between cultural archive, data interface, and digital artwork.
